Molly Moon is an orphan who hates life in the orphanage. While hiding away in her local library, she discovers an old book on hypnotism. Molly tries out some of the exercises in the book, and discovers they work! She is able to control other people. But someone is watching Molly, and figures out what she is doing, and they are determined to learn how she hypnotizes people.
This is the first book in a series about Molly Moon. She is a quirky character that is trying to find her way in the world while making it better for herself and her fellow orphans. It was fun to adventure with Molly and discover what she would make everyone do when she hypnotized them. She is not a perfect heroine, but she tries to do what seems right for the people she cares about. It was interesting to watch her character grow within the first book. It was a good beginning to what seems like a fun series.
This was the eighteenth book the Bookworms read together. Paige chose this book for us. It is always fun to be introduced to a new series, so we all had fun discovering Molly Moon together. We had a great time talking about what we would do if we could hypnotize people, how you should treat other people, and was Molly happy even though she had a lot of power? We talked about a lot more, and for a sampling of some of our topics here are some questions for the Bookworms. Warning! There may be some spoilers.
I always come up with some questions for the Bookworms, but I encourage them to ask questions as well. We also decided whoever chooses the book should come up with some question or say something about the book to the group. This way we ensure everyone stays involved and interested. So some of these questions are mine, and some will be from Paige.
Q&A With The Bookworms Book Club
Would you read the rest of the books in the series?
Paige I would read them.
Alejandro Yeah I think I would.
Would you want to be hypnotized?
Alejandro I don't know if I would like that. It might be annoying if someone could control you.
Paige If I know the person it would be ok.
If you could hypnotize someone what would you make them do?
Paige Probably do the dishes for me and watch my brother. Nothing mean.
Alejandro Make them go to school for me and do my homework so I could do other things.
Would you give up hypnotizing people?
Paige Probably. As long as it didn't mean someone else could do it to people.
Alejandro Maybe. It would be hard to give it up.
What did you think of Molly's best friend Rocky?
Alejandro He gave up, so in that way he was not a good friend to her.
Paige He gives a lot of advice.
Molly steals the hypnotism book, should she have done that?
Alejandro She should have asked to buy it.
Paige It was a useful book, so she should read it really fast and return it.
Why do you think it was more difficult to hypnotize animals than humans?
Paige Animals aren't as focused.
Alejandro Animals move around a lot and are hard to control.
What do you think the book meant when it said Molly was tired of people liking her?
Alejandro I was glad she felt that way because you should make friends not force people to be your friend.
Paige It was good she realized that hypnotizing them meant they weren't really her friends.

Alejandro The cook with the underwear
WhitneyThe lady who named all the kids funny names because she chose their names based off whatever she found them in or near.
